Conservative Views: Real Fiscal Conservatism

Josh Barro of Real Clear Markets wrote a great piece this morning on Chris Christie's actions to help New Jersey get out of the red. Christie is doing something very unlikely for a politician, what he said he was going to do. He is taking a comprehensive approach to lower taxes and cut spending, something I have never seen in my lifetime, sadly.

Yes, difficult decisions need to be made when spending is cut and Christie is taking on education. Guess what? That's exactly what our leaders need to do when we are in a financial wreck. Some programs are going to get less money. Does this necessarily  mean that education is going to suffer? Hell no. Sure, maybe students won't get new desks every couple of years and teachers may forgo some pay raises. But in no way is this going to affect the actually learning of the average student.

Let's hope politicians running for office in 2010 and 2012 take note of the responsible actions of Governor Christie.

  1. It goes without saying that in tough times that government has to tighten its belt. Only liberals should be abashed if teachers are laid off. Tough times are meant to bring us back to reality and to highlight what is unsustainable. It should do more to provide laws that will not let us go there again so easily. For instance, unions shouldn't be able to get so far ahead of the natural marketplace--by law. They shouldn't be able to stifle completion by laws such as closed shop or government accepting only union bids which stifles competition.
